What Are Vlogs? Video Marketing 101

Video blogging (or “Vlogs”) is all the rage right now. New users are opting in to YouTube almost daily in hopes of becoming the next big YouTube Sensation! But are Vlogs meant for everyone? And what exactly is a vlog?

Vlog: a blog in which the postings are primarily in video form. (Google dictionary)

What exactly are Vlogs?
As stated above, “Vlogs” are a form of blogging using mainly video instead of text or pictures. In today’s modern world, many potential clients and customers are searching for more visual stimulation than written, and video blogs are the perfect way to give your fans exactly what they are searching for. In fact, your customers may even be searching for video reviews of your products before they make the commitment to purchase them.

Should I start a Vlog?
This is really up to you, but I can tell you Vlogs are not for everyone. You have to keep in mind that when you record a vlog you must be quick and to the point, but friendly and personable. Can you do those things? Are you comfortable with being seen by (potentially) millions of people?

How do I make a Vlog?
First, make sure you have some form of webcam/camera and video editing software (generally, your computer comes equipped with a very generic software. This will work just fine). Next, sit or stand in a well lit area. Many laptop webcams don’t pick up the best quality video if you are in a poorly lit area. As funny as it may seem, bathrooms tend to have awesome lighting! Once you have a well lit area, begin recording! It’s a good idea to have a script ready or some form of topic at hand so you do not sound like you are rambling. If you mess up during your speech simply pause for a second and then keep going, you can later edit these bloopers out. After successfully recording your video, use your video editing software to cut out the “whoops!” moments you may have had during recording. Finally, after you have edited your video to your liking, upload it to your website or wherever you plan to host it. YouTube tends to be the jump off point for many who want to start a vlog channel.

Happy Vlogging!
